Individual Dental Insurance – Don’t Make This BIG Mistake

December 2nd 2008 in Dental Insurance

Have you been thinking of buying an individual dental insurance plan? Have you taken the time to do solid research on the different types of dental plans that are currently available? The reason that I’m asking is because it’s very likely that buying an individual dental insurance policy may not be your best option. Let me explain why…
Dental insurance is expensive and most reputable agents will tell you up front that it does not provide the best care. The reason for this is because it does not provide coverage for pre-existing conditions.
You see, when most people decide to buy a dental insurance policy, they do so because they are either in pain and need to be seen as soon as possible or they happen to be looking in the mirror and notice a new cavity or two and decide that it’s time to do something about it. Unfortunately, a dental insurance policy will not pay for your care in either of those situations.
Individual dental insurance is, well, insurance and insurance doesn’t cover a thing until you buy it and then, only from the date that the policy takes effect. Think about this for a minute. Let’s say that your parked car got rear ended on the street and it wasn’t insured. The result was a smashed in trunk. Do you think that you could go buy an insurance policy and have that repaired at their expense? Not a chance. That’s exactly what an insurance agent is going to say when they see a mouth full of cavities, “sorry about your luck”.
The individual dental plan option that you need to get is called a discount dental plan. Discount plans aren’t insurance coverage. What they are is a network of over 100,000 participating dentists and specialists that provide big savings on both routine and major dental work. This savings depends upon where you live, the procedure you need and the plan that you choose, however, savings is always at least 10% and as high as 60%. I’ve seen upper dentures discounted 60%, so don’t think that you won’t get big discounts on your major care.
The best thing that you can do is to find a discount plan provider in your area and take a look at their fee schedule. This will let you know how much you’ll have to pay for your care after each visit. If it looks good to you, which I can assure you it will look better than buying insurance, you simply pay the low annual fee to join and within a day or two you can begin saving big bucks on dental care. No deductibles, no paperwork, no age limits, no exclusions and no hassles. Take a look!
